“Living alive” is a new large-scale exhibition at the Arsenal dedicated to relations between art and city. The historical centre of Nizhny Novgorod was the subject of curators’ and artists’ research, all its components – people, plants, animals and dwindling wooden architecture – were regarded as one ecosystem.
“Living alive” project consists of two parts. The first part – museum one – based on the collection of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts (Moscow) and presents artworks of Russian and foreign artists which in their theme, form or material correspond to the urban space of Nizhny Novgorod. For the first time the Arsenal halls will host so many works of the world art stars: Jannis Kounellis, Stephan Balkenhol, Erwin Wurm, Alexander Rodchenko, Boris Turetsky, Gunther Uecker and others. The museum part is complemented with artifacts of the urban environment collected by the curator Artem Filatov.
The second part of the project – art residences – includes exhibition artworks and urban interventions – results of invited artists’ stay in Nizhny Novgorod. By popular request, the Wildlife Corner project – installation of the artist Vladislav Efimov dedicated to the Nizhny Novgorod wooden architecture – will be shown once again. It was the Wildlife Corner project that in 2013 marked the start of artistic researches of the Nizhny Novgorod urban space which grew into the Life of the Living project by tsummer 2016.
The exhibition will present over 30 artworks: sculpture, painting, graphics, installations. Several publications are planned for the project: exposition guides and city map with certain objects marked on it – museums, architectural monuments, works of street artists – which are thematically related to the exhibition. The exhibition will also include a lyceum for classes and discussions, interactive zone where visitors will be able to share their recollections of their home city.
